BCCI Finalizes Retention Policy for IPL 2025

As the mega IPL player auction approaches later this year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started finalizing the retention policy. Franchises have requested an increase in the number of player retentions for the next three seasons.

Franchise Opinions on Retention

According to Cricbuzz, the 10 franchises have varying opinions on the retention policy. However, the majority have asked for an increase in the number of retentions beyond the current allowance of four players per team. The final decision will be made later this month during a meeting with the team owners.

Consultation with Franchise CEOs

Hemang Amin, the Chief Operating Officer of the IPL, has reportedly consulted with franchise CEOs to gather their input on the player retention policy and salary caps for the next three years.

Potential Reintroduction of RTM Cards

In a move similar to the BCCI’s approach in 2021, the board is considering the reintroduction of Right-to-Match (RTM) cards. This rule would allow franchises to retain a player by matching the highest bid from another team before finalizing the sale. The RTM cards were not used in 2021, but their reintroduction is being considered for the IPL 2025 auction.

Requests for Increased Retentions

Most franchises have requested the allowance to retain between five and seven players, with one team proposing eight retentions. However, some teams have opposed any retention policy, suggesting instead that only the RTM option be implemented without any retentions.

Impact Player Role Discussions

Discussions with franchises have also covered the Impact Player role. Media rights owners favor this rule, while playing sides and coaching staff have shown less enthusiasm. Despite this, the BCCI is expected to maintain the Impact Player rule for the foreseeable future.

The BCCI will finalize these decisions later this month, shaping the framework for the IPL 2025 mega-auction.(Dubai7 realmoneygame)
